150,000 show up for Orlando's Fireworks at the Fountain

ORLANDO, Fla. — As the sky lit up over Lake Eola in Orlando, an estimated 150,000 people watched, having gathered throughout the day for this year’s Fireworks at the Fountain Fourth of July celebration.

This year marked the 40th time Fireworks at the Fountain sent streaks of exploding light into the sky over Orlando.

Weather had been a worry earlier in the day, as storms passed over the city and surrounding area.

By the time the fireworks started shooting off, though, the skies had cleared.

“This is the 40th annual Fireworks at the Fountain, (it was) a great night,” Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said. “The weather has cooperated. I think everybody’s ready to celebrate our independence.”

Security was a concern with so many people in attendance, causing a large police presence for Tuesday’s event.

Long before nightfall, Fireworks at the Fountain kicked off with food booths, musical performances and other activities for individuals and families.

Stephen Murdock was at Lake Eola when the rain started but didn’t let it deter him.

“We kind of waited out the storm in the parking garage in our car,” he said. “We saw it lightly drizzling (and) we made our way out here.”

The grand finale for the event were the fireworks that kicked off at about 9:10 p.m.
