16-year-old accused of taking Melbourne police on high-speed chase in stolen truck

MELBOURNE, Fla. — A 16-year-old boy is accused of stealing a Ford F-450 truck Saturday and fleeing from police at speeds topping 100 mph, officials said.

The owner of the truck didn’t realize it had been stolen until police spotted it on Aurora Road near U.S. 1, the Melbourne Police Department said.

When officers approached the truck, Travis Roos is accused of speeding away in a black cloud of smoke, investigators said.

The truck got onto Interstate 95, exited on Palm Bay Road, turned onto Minton Road and followed it to Jupiter Boulevard SW in Palm Bay, where Roos crashed into a parked vehicle, officers said.

Roos fled from the truck but was located in a wooded lot about 1,500 feet from the crash, police said.

Investigators said they found a .22-caliber rifle with a scope in the back seat of the truck.

The rifle was believed to have been stolen during a burglary earlier in the night, officers said.

Investigators were recommending that Roos be charged as an adult.

Another person was believed to be involved in the theft of the truck but not the pursuit, police said.
