2 Volusia County bridges make list of being ‘structurally deficient'

More than 250 bridges in the state are considered structurally deficient, according to a list released Wednesday by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association.

Three bridges in Volusia County made the cut.

The association released a list of bad bridges in the U.S., including the south and north bridges of Interstate 95 over Spruce Creek and Orange Avenue over the Halifax River.

The bridge on Orange Avenue has been closed since June as crews make way for its replacement.

Work on the Orange Avenue bridge is expected to be done by 2019.

Crews are in the process of building new spans in the middle of the Spruce Creek bridges just south of Dunlawton Avenue.

“We’ll be shifting traffic over to one of the new spans in the spring,” said Jennifer Horton of the Florida Department of Transportation.

American Road and Transportation Builders included the bridges in the list despite the work underway because the list was based on federal data dating back to 2014.

The Washington, D.C.-based association represents a number of construction companies in the country.

A spokesperson said the report is compiled so people can understand the condition of the busiest roads.

The association estimated that fixing bad bridges in Florida could cost $2 billion.
