BB gun Walmart shooter in critical condition after officer-involved shooting, police say

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Police Department on Friday released the name of the accused BB gunman who shot at three people in a Walmart parking lot.

Alexander Marcel Proctor, 26, has been charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. He’s currently in critical but stable condition after Orlando police officer Craig Adler shot him.

Proctor was listed as a transient on the arrest report.

Officers received a call from the Walmart at 3101 Princeton Street in Orlando at 4:01 p.m. Thursday saying that Proctor shot a customer who was in the parking lot unloading groceries, police said.  Proctor approached the customer and said, “Hey.” The customer turned around and the suspect began firing his BB gun. The customer was hit in the chest and arm, but was not seriously hurt, police said.

"And striking that person in the chest and the arm, which caused that person to jump into the rear of his pickup truck," said Orlando Police Chief John Mina.

Orlando police said Proctor purchased the BB gun from the Walmart moments before the shooting.

This is the same Walmart where Orlando Lt. Debra Clayton was shot and killed in early January.

Proctor walked back into the Walmart, made a purchase, shot another customer and walked outside.

Proctor left Walmart and was walking at Lynx Lane and John Young Parkway when he was spotted by Adler. Police said Proctor pointed a gun at Adler and fired, so the officer shot and injured Proctor.

"That person should have immediately surrendered to law enforcement, but he didn't. He chose to take a very aggressive action against a law enforcement officer," Mina said.

The officer was not hurt. He’s been with the Orlando Police Department since February 2013. He has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure, while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates.

Police have not said why Proctor was shooting the BB gun.

Eyewitness News asked Mina if Adler knew the suspect only had a BB gun when he opened fire. Mina said that was part of the FDLE investigation.

"What I can tell you even if the officer knew it was a BB gun, when someone points that type of weapon at you and points it at you, you have to take action to prevent further injury or protect your own life," said Mina.

Proctor has criminal history in two other states and mental issues, according to police and his family.
