Beachside revival underway in Volusia County

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Volusia county leaders call it the start of Daytona's beachside revival.

A massive $130 million hotel, condominium and parking garage project has been in the works at Oakridge Boulevard and A1A since 2013, the old site of the Thunderbird Hotel, but it has hit some snags.

Channel 9's Mike Springer found out it will be the largest development beachside that Daytona Beach has ever seen.

“It's nice to see this rebirth of Daytona. It’s exciting,” said Josh Wagner, a Volusia County councilman.

A Russian developer has put together a plan for a massive 517 space parking garage with 501 hotel rooms and 122 condo units.

Wagner said at times the project was in doubt. The project had to jump a few hurdles that included financing and making adjustments for the city’s sewage and water connections.

Once the parking garage is done, Wagner said the hotel and then the condos will follow.

He anticipates the project will bring thousands of jobs to the area and could spur other further growth along the beach side.

“I think all those projects, once those projects start getting connected more, you'll start seeing more investment there,” Wagner said.

Wagner could not give Eyewitness News a hard time frame for when the hotel will go up, but said he expects that should happen within the next couple of years.
