Bomb squad investigates suspicious package in Brevard County

PALM BAY, Fla. — Crews from the Melbourne Police Department and the Brevard County Bomb Squad are investigating a suspicious package.

Investigators were called around 5:30 a.m. Thursday to Stack Village Plaza, not far from Richard's Paint, at Palm Bay Road NE and Stack Boulevard in Melbourne.

Crews found a bottle containing liquid and with a metal cord or wire sticking out, investigators said.

"When I saw the FBI and the dogs, I knew this wasn't your average box on the side of the road. It was definitely scary," said Courtney Bancroft.

Channel 9's Melonie Holt was there when crews moved the suspicious item to a safe location to detonate it, but it's still unclear what was in the bottle.

Investigators said they don't believe that a person or business in the plaza was targeted.

It's also unclear if surveillance cameras at any nearby businesses captured the device being dropped off.
