Brothers save fishermen from Lake Jesup after boat sinks

Two good Samaritans are being credited with rescuing two stranded fisherman Sunday night from Lake Jesup.

The Seminole County lake is mostly known for its large population of alligators.

Brothers Robert Myers and Terry Myers said the fishermen’s boat started to sink so they sprang into action.

“It wasn’t a buoy, it was a gas tank, a small cooler and two bobbing heads out there,” Robert Myers said.

The fishermen’s boat couldn’t handle the choppy lake and the men weren’t wearing life jackets.

“It was rough. Even for a boat built for that kind of water,” said Robert Myers.

The Myers brothers brought their boat out to rescue the fishermen, who were hanging on to their boat’s gas tank and a cooler.

The murky water is known for its abundance of alligators, but the two brothers said the choppy water is a common problem for boaters.

“One guy said, ‘I can swim all day. Help my friend,” Terry Myers said. “But he was still panicking. It was so hard to try to get him to calm down.”

They said debris from Hurricane Matthew is an issue on the water as well.

The Myers said their father was a commercial fisherman and they witnessed him perform water rescues on Lake Jesup and Lake Monroe growing up.

Channel 9 reporter Ty Russell contacted with Florida Fish and Wildlife for its report on the investigation, but has not heard back.
