Central Florida residents turn out to give supplies for Hurricane Harvey victims

CENTRAL FLORIDA, Fla. — Scenes of the devastation Hurricane Harvey has wrought on Texas have inspired Central Florida residents to donate supplies for victims of the storm.

Northland Church in Longwood is sending 10 volunteers to help a church to a church requesting help preparing hot meals.

Judy Head is overseeing the volunteer operation.

"We're trying to average 300 lunches and 300 dinners," she said.

The volunteers plan to be gone for a week or two and also help gut houses and train other volunteers.

People turned out in force at the Belle Isle City Hall Saturday to donate items for Hurricane Harvey victims in Texas.

Organizers of the donation drive are collecting everything from water to diapers.

Randy Ross, who organized the event, said they’re on their way to filling up five semitrucks full of supplies to send to Harvey victims.

Those who wish to donate can drop off their items at the Belle Isle city hall until 5 p.m. Saturday or before noon on Sunday.

“By partnering with the disaster relief side of Americorps and with a team of volunteers from Orange and Lake counties escorting the donations to Texas, we can ensure the community's donations will make it directly into the hands of those in need," said Ross.

Organizers plan to send their first shipment of supplies Sunday afternoon.
