Charges dropped in hit-and-run case due to lack of evidence, prosecutors say

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — It has been more than a month since Thomas Glidewell was arrested and charged with leaving the scene after hitting an 8-year-old with his van while the boy was riding a bike on Alpine Lane.

On Monday, the charges against Glidewell were dropped and he was released from jail.

Prosecutors said they dropped the charges because they didn’t have enough evidence to go forward with a trial.

Glidewell’s son, Barton Glidewell, was concerned about his father, who he said was involved an another crash since getting out of jail.

“I told him he shouldn’t drive and he’s stubborn and keeps driving,” Barton Glidewell said.

According to the police report on Glidewell’s latest crash, he was in the turn lane on Browning Avenue when he pulled out in front of a vehicle driving west on Cheney Highway.

“He has extensive medical history and the hospital and doctors keep releasing him out to the public and letting him drive,” Barton Glidewell said.

The family of the 8-year-old involved in the hit-and-run crash declined to comment on Thomas Glidewell’s release.

As long as Thomas Glidewell is able to get behind the wheel and legally drive, his son worried that someone could get seriously hurt.

“It scares me,” Barton Glidewell said. “I’m scared he’s going to run into somebody and hurt him, or hurt somebody else.”

It was a difficult thing to say, he added.

“It is. It’s my father.”

Following Thomas Glidewell’s release and subsequent crash, Titusville police said they requested a re-examination of his driver’s license.

In a statement, the police department said there was insufficient evidence to prove Gildewell had knowledge of the crash.
