Couple arrested after attempted Walmart carjacking

LEESBURG, Fla. — A couple was arrested in connection to an attempted carjacking and robbery of a woman in a Walmart parking lot in Leesburg.
 
A woman was waiting in her car in the parking lot of the Walmart on Citrus Boulevard when the couple jumped in, police said.
 
They told her not to scream, to drive away and said that they would stab her and kill her if she didn't give them cash, her purse and her cellphone, according to authorities.
 
Police arrested Jasmine Wanke, 25, and Donte McCain, 35, police said.
 
Video surveillance from the Walmart show Wanke and McCain inside the store before wandering around the parking asking for a ride, according to the police report.
 
The couple is facing charges of attempted kidnapping, attempted carjacking and armed robbery, authorities said.
 
Eyewitness News spoke to one customer who said people have approached her in the past looking for a ride.
 
"I've had people ask me before you have $5 or so for gas, I need a ride ran out of gas, had lots of people ask from this parking lot," one customer said.
 
The woman was able to get away after telling the couple her husband had the car keys, police said.
