Deltona couple fakes home invasion to cover up other crime, deputies say

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A Deltona couple is accused of staging a home invasion to cover up a hit-and-run crash, Volusia County deputies said.

Garrick and Adria Gunn were arrested Tuesday.

Adria Gunn is accused of being involved in a hit-and-run crash that happened June 6 at East Beresford and South Amelia avenues in DeLand, investigators said. One person was hospitalized as a result of the crash.

A witness to the crash told deputies that Adria Gunn asked him for a ride, but he refused. He later heard Adria Gunn on the phone saying, “Man, hurry up and come get me, ‘cause I don’t have no license.”

Investigators also found a broken, fake, painted fingernail, which they believe came from Adria Gunn inside the truck. The witness who said Adria Gunn asked for a ride following the crash had the same type of fingernails, investigators said.

Garrick Gunn called deputies on Friday to report a burglary to their home on Kimberly Drive. He said his insurance company called him that morning to tell him his truck was involved in a crash while he and his wife were out of town. Garrick Gunn said his truck was stolen and the door frame to the home was damaged, deputies said.

Investigators said there was no damage to the lock or the door and there would have been if someone had forced their way into the home.

The Gunns were arrested and charged with destroying, tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, making a false report of a crime and providing false information to law enforcement officials.
