Deputies: Drunken Polk County teacher plows through mailbox after Mardi Gras parade

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A Polk County teacher was arrested on charges of drinking and driving Saturday evening after he crashed into a concrete mailbox on his way home from a Lake Wales Mardi Gras parade, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.

Anthony Stanciu, 51, was arrested at about 6 p.m. after he plowed through a mailbox at a home on Lake Daisy Drive, said Carrie Horstman, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

Stanciu, whose speech was slurred and whose breath smelled of alcohol, told a deputy he was a math teacher at Bartow High School, Horstman said.

“Stanciu performed three field sobriety tests and exhibited several signs of impairment,” Horstman said. “Upon being booked into the jail, Stanciu gave two breath samples for a breath analysis test, which showed two separate readings of .195 and .205 alcohol content.”

He was released from the Polk County Jail after posting $500 bail.
