Deputies: Fisherman who found 24 kilos of cocaine sold drugs to undercover officers

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Orange County deputies said a man made a rookie mistake trying to sell 24 kilos of cocaine he found during a fishing trip in the Keys.

Investigators said Taylor Oldfield, 24, had no idea the value of what he had.

They said he sold undercover deputies a kilo for about $10,000 when experienced dealers could have made double or triple that amount.

Norman Fuhrman, 29, was also arrested in the bust.

Deputies said it was not the kind of drug deal arrest they typically make.

“It wasn’t the traditional bust in that these guys. I think they were not experienced drug dealers,” said Capt. Carlos Espinosa.

He said the men were fishing in the Keys a few weeks ago and found a box in the ocean, filled with 24 kilos of cocaine.

“They found some free cocaine in the ocean, and instead of turning it in, they decided to make a profit off of it,” said Espinosa.

Deputies were first tipped off that Oldfield was trying to unload cocaine cheaply.

When deputies and Apopka police nabbed him, he admitted he had three more kilos at his home in Tavares, along with $12,000 cash.

Oldfield then called Fuhrman, who delivered another 13 kilos of cocaine to the Sheriff’s Office substation in Apopka.

Deputies said Fuhrman agreed to meet at the Rock Springs Bar and Grill, where Oldfield works, to deliver the proceeds from some of the other kilos.

He was arrested with $20,000 cash.

In all, deputies confiscated 17 kilos of cocaine and nearly $72,000 in cash.

The suspects have bonded out of jail.
