Deputies: Man arrested after fleeing traffic stop, dragging deputy

PIERSON, Fla. — A Volusia County man is behind bars after injuring a deputy while fleeing a traffic stop and leading deputies on a chase Sunday afternoon, the Sheriff's Office said.

Deputy William Kretzer pulled over LaRodney Bennett, 27, for speeding on North Center Street in Pierson around 3:18 p.m., deputies said.

Kretzer ran Bennett's name and ordered him out of the car after discovering two outstanding warrants for him.

When Bennett refused multiple times, Kretzer stuck his hand through the window to try to open the car door, prompting Bennett to hit the gas, deputies said.

Deputies said Kretzer was dragged before he was able to let go and roll away from the vehicle, sustaining only minor cuts and scratches.

Bennett drove down some dirt roads before crashing into a tree, deputies said.

The Sheriff's Office K-9 unit tracked Bennett down in a wooded area around 4:53 p.m. and arrested him.

Bennett was taken to Florida Hospital DeLand to be treated for a bite he received from the K-9.

Deputies said he will be charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer with violence.

His two outstanding warrants were for pretrial violations associated with a prior charge of assault.
