Deputy uses Taser on student during fight at Volusia school

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — The attorney for a Volusia County student is speaking out after a deputy used a Taser on the teenager during a fight at Spruce Creek High School on Monday.

The fight between Jason Tidman and ninth-grader happened around 2:45 p.m., the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

Tidman's attorney claims the ninth-grader started the fight and said the teen shouldn't have been tased. Family members said Tidman had a heart problem in 2013 that prevented him from playing sports.

"First of all, it's not a major fight. It's two teenage boys having a fight," said attorney Michael Politis. "And number two, there are other ways to subdue a suspect or other people engaged in a fight."

A YouTube video has surfaced that shows the incident.

The Sheriff's Office said it's reviewing all of the facts and circumstances of the case to make sure the deputy's actions were appropriate.

According to investigators, both students were suspended and are possibly facing criminal charges for the brawl. Tidman said he wants to be allowed back at Spruce Creek High School.
