BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Nearly a dozen dogs rescued from a Merritt Island house fire earlier this week were just taken in by the SPCA of Brevard.
The goal is to find new homes for them after they were surrendered by their owners, who lost dozens of pets in the blaze.
The dogs will be available for adoption in about seven to 10 days after they’re medically cleared.
Officials with SPCA will also do their own evaluation to make sure the animals have been spayed or neutered.
“We're pleased to say for the majority of the dogs, they're in good health and good spirits,” said Cpl. Dave Jacobs with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.
Not all of the dogs that survived the fire were surrendered to animal services.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire Thursday on Kennwood Avenue that claimed the lives of 45 cats, five dogs, a bird and a raccoon.
SPCA described the dogs available for adoption as Australian shepherd. A couple of them are blind or deaf.
