Dozens of Brevard residents left without homes after Hurricane Matthew

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Dozens of Brevard County families are unsure whether they will be able to go home after their apartments were heavily damaged by Hurricane Matthew.

The roof on the Bay Towers on Washington Street in Titusville was damaged.

The city said the building is uninhabitable.

Residents went to their neighborhood to save what they could.

Management said it hopes residents can return in a few weeks, but there's no definite timeline.

About 70 families need housing.

The Red Cross was in Titusville assisting dozens of displaced residents at the Blue Beach Club apartments, also known as the Bay Towers.

“They may be able to fix it, but for now we're homeless. We have friends that are staying in their cars," Valerie Jensen said. "Basically, it's just people taking me off the street, you know, and coming in and getting what little you can at a time. We're just waiting on assistance so we can find another place to live.”

Jensen and her mother are disabled.

They were in their apartment when Hurricane Matthew ripped the roof off the complex, and like many others there, they had just paid their rent.

The city of Titusville has labeled the entire building "uninhabitable."

“All the stars used to stay here. (It’s) just a nostalgic place,” said resident Cora Jacobs.

The management for the complex allowed residents to collect personal belongings.

“We have today reached out to the community. We have a young lady that works for Walmart. She's managed to find six people homes today. Other people are staying with family and friends,” said Tammy Pepper, property manager.

The building is without power.
The city's building department said that will have to be addressed along with the roof issue and any damage caused by water intrusion before residents will be allowed to return.

“We're working on it. It's just a process,” Pepper said.

Channel 9 learned that 41 structures had minor damage, which is anything from missing roof shingles to broken windows.
