Driver tries to run down trooper on I-95 in Volusia County, FHP says

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — A Florida Highway Patrol trooper was nearly run down on Interstate 95 in Volusia County, a spokeswoman said.

The incident was reported at about 5:20 p.m. on southbound I-95 just north of West Granada Boulevard, FHP said.

Trooper Cody Brown, 20, had pulled onto the shoulder at about 4:20 p.m. to assist in alerting vehicles about a broken-down car hauler that was being worked on by a mechanic, officials said.

A silver Chrysler 300 that was traveling in the inside lane of the highway abruptly switched to the outside lane and swerved onto the shoulder toward Brown, FHP said.

The trooper dove between the car hauler and his patrol car to avoid being hit, investigators said.

The car then continued south on I-95, exited onto State Road 40, ran a red light and drove back onto I-95, FHP said.

It is believed the driver purposefully tried to run over the trooper, investigators said.

The trooper suffered minor injuries when he dove out of the car's path, but no one was hit by the Chrysler, FHP said.

The vehicle was registered to someone in Fort Lauderdale, but FHP did not release any other information about the car or driver.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing and charges against the driver are pending, FHP said.
