MARION COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating after a man died Monday following a deputy-involved shooting in Marion County.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said it is not known if the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or from a shot fired by the deputy.
Deputies said they were looking for Joseph Napoli, 59, for questioning in a case they were working.
A deputy saw Napoli's vehicle parked on the side of the road near 160th Avenue at about 4:30 p.m.
The deputy, who has not been identified, told investigators she parked behind Napoli’s vehicle, got out of her patrol car and saw Napoli was holding a handgun.
The deputy said Napoli raised his weapon so she opened fire.
Deputies believe Napoli fired his weapon at the same time.
The deputy was not injured, but Napoli died at the scene.
It is not known if Napoli shot himself or was struck by a shot from the deputy’s weapon.
The deputy involved is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
