FDOT to install sound-reducing windows in homes near Sunrail facility

SANFORD, Fla. — The Florida Department of Transportation announced it will be installing noise-reducing windows in homes near a Sunrail Maintenance Facility in addition to a noise wall.

Tests of less expensive mufflers at the developments at the Preserve at Lake Monroe haven't worked, so a noise wall could cost the department more than $1 million.

FDOT said in order for their investment to stick, residents will get new noise-reducing windows.

FDOT secretary Jim Boxold promised the noise wall and sound proof windows on Wednesday.

"It is unusual that we would go into a private home and make improvements to that home, but I think that's an indication of the lengths we're willing to go to make sure we're good neighbors," Boxold said.

Eyewitness News found that the decible readings in the Preserve at Lake Monroe were dangerously high.

"It should've been in an industrial area. What we've seen is not going to work," Sanford mayor Jeff Triplett said.

A request by Triplett to move the complex completely was denied. Residents wish they could move, but said they can't sell because of the noise.

"If they can buy the house from me, give me a fair price I'll move," Angel Wasef said.

Channel 9 is working to find out how many homeowners will get new windows and how much it will cost.
