FHP: Damaged van matches description of vehicle that fled fatal Turnpike crash

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Troopers found a damaged van Thursday that matches the description of a vehicle that fled a crash Wednesday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The 2014 Honda van matches the description given by a witness of the vehicle that fled after fatally striking Karissa Hilts, 29, of New York, Trooper Steven Montiero said.

Investigators said the vehicle's damage is consistent with what happened during the crash and that it's being processed for evidence.

"FHP has been in contact with someone of interest to this case," Montiero said.

Troopers said Hilts was hit while she was searching for a cellphone that fell out of her vehicle along Florida’s Turnpike in Orange County.

The crash happened in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike near mile marker 258, Montiero said.

Investigators said the vehicle that fled the crash had heavy front-end damage and a damaged front windshield.

The crash remains under investigation.

No other details were given.
