FHP searches for driver in fatal Merrit Island hit-and-run

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. — Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the hit-and-run death of a Merritt Island man Sunday night along Courtenay Parkway.

"It's unfathomable to me that they left him in the road like that. There's no saying if it would have made a difference if they stayed. Now we'll never know," said Rhonda Terry, the victim's sister-in-law.

Steven Terry was killed by a hit-and-run driver shortly after he fell from his bike.

"We've got some vehicle parts we're looking at. We're looking at a GMC Sonoma or a Chevrolet
S-10 pickup. Right now the range of vehicle we have is pretty wide open," Lt. Channng Taylor, of the FHP, said.

Rhonda Terry said the driver wouldn't want his or her family left to die and should come forward.

Troopers said the driver may not have been at fault before they left the scene, but leaving the scene of a crash carries a minimum of four years in prison.

Taylor urged the driver to come forward before authorities find them.

Officials said the pickup truck involved is likely to have front-end and undercarriage damage.
