SORRENTO, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol is seeking a gray 2012 Kia Soul troopers believe was involved in a Lake County hit-and-run crash that killed a 26-year-old man and seriously injured an 18-year-old woman in mid-July.
Police believe a woman was driving the Soul east on Central Avenue near Sorrento shortly after 9 p.m. July 12 when the driver tried to turn left onto the northbound lanes of County Road 437, Sgt. Kim Montes said.
The woman struck a moped traveling south on CR 437, throwing its operator, Patrick Burns, and his passenger, Alexander Swisher, onto the northbound lanes of the road, Montes said.
Burns died at the scene, while Swisher was taken to a hospital for her injuries, troopers said.
A 48-year-old Sorrento man was driving a Toyota Prius north on County Road 437 and wasn't able to stop in time, running over Burns, investigators said.
Troopers said the driver of the gray car drove away from the crash scene.
"After the collision, you can see that both headlights are still intact, so we think there is going to be front to front right damage on the Kia Soul. Somebody knows who this vehicle belongs to, or somebody knows where this vehicle is at," Montes said.
It's believed that she and Burns were in the process of moving to Florida from Indiana, investigators said.
No other details were given.
There were 18 fatal hit-and-run crashes in Central Florida last year from Jan. 1 through July 13. So far this year, Central Florida is also at 18 fatal hit-and-runs, troopers said.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call troopers at 407-737-2213.
