FHP: Infant left in car at Waterford Lakes while parents shopped

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A man was arrested after a 2-month-old infant was left alone in a car Thanksgiving night outside a Best Buy, troopers said.

A trooper noticed the infant at the Best Buy in Waterford Lakes Thursday evening.

The trooper saw the child was asleep in a car seat in the back seat and the car was locked.

The trooper went to shoppers in line and made an announcement to try to find the owner of the car.

About 10 minutes later, when no one came forward, the trooper broke the window and got the infant boy out.

The boy seemed lethargic and paramedics were called, according to a release.

A short time later, 34-year-old Haider Hassan Khudhair Darwash came back to the car and said he was the father.

He said he thought his wife had the baby, according to troopers.

The wife was found standing in line at a business in the Waterford Lakes Town Center.

The father was arrested for felony child neglect. The Florida Department of Children and Families was called. The child was unharmed.

Darwash, who was booked into the Orange County Jail, bonded out early Friday morning.
