Fight-turned-gun battle ends in man's death, Daytona Beach police say

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Police officers raced to a Daytona Beach neighborhood on reports that a gun battle was taking place in the street Tuesday night, officials said.

When officers arrived in the area of Fourth Street and Lewis Drive, they found Bashawn Johnson riddled with bullets and dead inside a car, the Daytona Beach Police Department said.

Police believe the shooting started off as a fight and escalated when at least two people pulled out guns and started shooting.

Numerous bullet casings from different guns, one possibly a high-powered weapon, were found at the scene, investigators said.

Police are interviewing witnesses and said they do not have any suspect information.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood said it was a miracle that more people weren't killed.

"Any kid could have been outside sitting on the front porch of their house and you have high-powered weapons fired into the neighborhood," he said. "We cannot allow violence like this to occur on our streets."

Police had not identified a suspect or a motive Wednesday.
