Former Volusia County corrections officer accused of having sex with inmate

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A former Volusia County corrections officer is now the one in a cell after she was charged with sexual misconduct.

Investigators said Megan Lynch, 27, was having a relationship with a female inmate while she worked at the jail.

Lynch resigned from her job at the jail in June.

Deputies said Lynch and the 26-year-old inmate admitted to the relationship, with the inmate saying it was consensual.

Investigators said other inmates were used as conduits to pass notes between Lynch and the inmate, and at least one acted as a lookout while the two were behind closed doors in various locations inside the jail.

They said Lynch arranged to have the inmate assigned to her as a trusty, which meant the inmate was assigned to clean offices in the facility.

Another inmate reported the relationship to authorities, investigators said.

In October, the sheriff’s office was brought in to conduct a criminal investigation, which included a review of recordings of more than 450 phone calls that the inmate made to Lynch. In one of them, Lynch said: “I understand that somewhere we crossed the line.”

Lynch is also accused of watching the woman in the shower, an act deputies described as voyeurism.

The affidavit said Lynch would visit the inmate on her days off and kissed the inmate through locked doors.

Lynch was arrested at a residence in Port Orange shortly before 6:30 p.m. Thursday. She was taken to the Flagler County Jail and posted her $10,000 bond.
