Seven displaced after storm damages Cape Canaveral apartments

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — The roof of a multi-unit residence off Orange Avenue in Cape Canaveral was seriously damaged when a round of severe storms ripped through the city Friday.

Shingles on the large multi-unit building were almost completely blown away, leaving bare wood across most of its roof.

No injuries were reported in connection with the damage.

Families in the building were devastated by the storm and said rainwater poured into their homes.

Bryan Miller lost just about everything in his apartment.

“My bedroom is soaked, my bed is soaked, my brother’s bedroom is soaked. He’s got a 2-year-old. We are living in a flooded place right now,” Miller said.

The winds reached 55 mph and left debris all over the neighborhood.

“There is damage on the soffit on the house across the street and there is damage to a privacy fence on Harrison, which is the next street up,” said Capt. Brian Dennison of Cape Canaveral Fire Rescue.

Dawn George’s apartment and three others suffered damage.

“It sounded like a freight train coming through and boom, I looked out my back window and I saw the roof,” George said.

Dominic Canzano came home to see the roof in his backyard.

He said he was deep sea fishing when the storm roared through.

“When that storm hit, it was terrifying. It was crazy and pouring rain. I was scared,” Canzano said.

The landlord of the duplex called the Red Cross to come out and help the residents find a place to stay while he makes repairs.
