FWC announces change to application process for alligator hunting season

FLORIDA — The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced a change in the application process for the annual alligator hunting season.

The application period for the Phase I random drawing, in which 5,000 alligator harvest permits will be available, runs from May 6 until May 16. Hunters can submit their applications with choices of up to 20 hunt areas and periods.

Applications can be submitted at any county tax collector's office or license agent or online at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com. Applicants must provide credit card information when they apply, which is a change from previous years. There is also a cancellation feature that allows applicants to update their hunt choices or credit card information.

FWC officials said applicants should see an authorization on their credit card verifying that they can cover the cost of the permit, but it does not mean that they have been awarded a permit. Once authorizations are complete, the lottery drawing will be held.

The cost for an alligator trapping license or harvest permit and two hide validation CITES tags is $271.50 for Florida residents, $21.50 for those with a Florida resident disabled hunting and fishing License and $1,021.50 for nonresidents. The cost for applicants who already have licenses is $61.50.

The hunting season lasts from Aug. 15 to Nov. 1.
