Jaguar exhibit expansion opens at Brevard Zoo

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — The Brevard Zoo’s maintenance team has completed the finishing touches on a second jaguar node across from the existing habitat.

The addition features seven platforms of varying heights for the big cats to engage in natural climbing behaviors.

A 50-foot chute stretches above the heads of guests, connecting the two habitats.%

“This is all about giving our animals more choices,” said Michelle Smurl, director of animal programs at the zoo. “If they want to cross the chute or stay in off-exhibit housing, they can do that. If they want to swim or climb or participate in training, they can do that.”

A mesh wall behind a glass panel will allow zookeepers to demonstrate behavioral enrichment techniques in front of guests.

The Brevard Zoo has four jaguars, which are part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, a carefully managed breeding program, zoo officials said.
