Kissimmee woman arrested year after baby's fentanyl death

A small bag of fentanyl is pictured here. The drug is 50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine and just a speck of it can kill. Authorities say a 10-year-old Miami boy came into contact with the drug late last month and died.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — A Central Florida mother has been arrested in Puerto Rico on manslaughter charges for the fentanyl overdose death of her 3-month-old.

The baby died last year.

Kissimmee police said Caroline Sanchez, 26, used a fentanyl patch to put a lethal dose of the drug in her child's mouth.

The child's father told police at the time, he believed Sanchez was suffering from post-partum depression.

A Kissimmee police report says a member of the infant's household was using prescription fentanyl patches for pain relief. Investigators believe Sanchez used a patch to give the 3-month-old a lethal dose of the synthetic opioid in July 2016.

Police said the child's age made accidental ingestion unlikely.

Sanchez moved to Puerto Rico since shortly after the child's death.

She Sanchez wasn't immediately booked into a jail. It wasn't known if she had an attorney.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
