Leaders approve plan to make part of I-Drive more pedestrian friendly

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A study found that there are about 17 intersections per square mile on the busy road, but a 5.5-square-mile section of the road isn’t walkable.

Orange County leaders passed an ordinance Tuesday that they’re calling the I-Drive Overlay Zone Code.

It breaks up the area into eight districts, which come with certain rules.

For instance, any type of amusement ride would only be allowed in the entertainment, SeaWorld and Universal districts.

Helicopter tour companies wouldn’t be allowed at all.

The code would call for more open spaces, such as plazas and squares, and would outline the need for on-street parking, which I-Drive doesn’t have.

It also sets up regulations for streets to have a more predictable grid pattern to make it easier for drivers to navigate.

Another part of the code involved the height of buildings and how the fronts of them should look.
