Man accused of dragging motorcycle with car almost 400 feet in fatal crash

LEESBURG, Fla. — Two days after a fatal wreck on Citrus Boulevard involving a car and a motorcycle, a Leesburg man was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide.

Jose Omar Azua, 33, told officers after the crash that he wasn’t behind the wheel when a 1997 Saturn station wagon rear-ended a 2011 Harley-Davidson, the Leesburg Police Department said.

The crash was reported at 11:34 p.m. Saturday on Citrus Boulevard near Tally Road.

Officers found the female motorcycle driver dead on the road, a Leesburg police report said.

The victim was not named in the report.

A witness told officers that he saw a car “fly by” and smash into the rear of the motorcycle.

The woman was thrown from the motorcycle and into the car’s windshield before rolling off and onto the ground, investigators said.

The motorcycle was stuck to the front of the Saturn, which continued to drive nearly 400 feet after the crash, officers said.

There was no indication that the driver of the Saturn hit the brakes before hitting the motorcycle, police said.

Azua was standing next to the car when police arrived and tried to walk away when officers spotted him, the report said.

Officers caught up with the man, who was “clearly intoxicated,” about 60 feet from the Saturn, the report said.

Azua told investigators that someone else was behind the wheel because he was “too drunk to drive.”

Without a witness and no evidence to show that Azua was driving, officers released him from custody, the report said.

Two days later, Azua showed up at the Leesburg Police Department asking about the crash, officers said.

During an interview with police, Azua admitted that he was behind the wheel at the time of the crash, the report said.

He was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
