Man accused of shooting Brevard deputy in prostitution sting bonds out of jail

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A man accused of shooting a Brevard County deputy bonded out of Orange County Jail early Monday morning.

John Derossett, 65, was charged in August with attempted murder on law enforcement, and to avoid conflict of interest with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office, authorities said Derossett was held in Orange County.

Derossett's family was at the jail when he was released after posting $450,000 bail.

Derossett was accused of trying to kill Brevard County Deputy John Casey Smith outside a Port St. John home in August during a shooting that stemmed from an undercover operation to bust a prostitution ring.

Derossett's niece, Mary Derossett, was also arrested.

Smith was critically injured while trying to arrest Mary Derossett.

Mary Derossett, 42, accepted a plea deal in her case and was sentenced to six months in jail and six months of probation after pleading no contest to prostitution and resisting arrest.

Two Brevard County deputies lost their jobs after they were accused of being clients of the prostitution ring.

John Derossett faces life in prison if he is convicted.
Smith was released from the hospital in October.
