Man found dead during Orlando shooting investigation, police say

ORLANDO, Fla. — Officers responding Wednesday night to reports of gunfire in the area of Jefferson Street and Lee Avenue found a seriously injured man lying in the grass, the Orlando Police Department said.

The gunshots were reported at 9:51 p.m., officers said.

The victim, later identified as J.P. White II, 29, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police did not say if the victim was shot or if he was killed in another manner, but confirmed that they are investigating the death as a homicide.

The area of Wednesday night's shooting was also the scene of a gunfight between at least two men on Sept. 5.

Homes and cars were caught in the crossfire during that incident, but no one was injured, investigators said.

Emily Slater, who lives across the street from where White was found, said the violence in her neighborhood is becoming almost unbearable.

"I was lying in bed and I heard, like, six shots," she said. "Then about 30 minutes later we came out and saw the man's body lying near the two-story apartments.

"It's bad. It needs to stop."

No other details on the homicide investigation were immediately released.
