Deputies: Orange County man killed with ax in fight over beer, lottery tickets

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies said the man who killed another man with an ax in a fight over lottery tickets and beer was arrested Friday night.

The attack was reported on the 2100 block of South Westmoreland Drive near Kaley Street.

Orange County Sheriff's Office deputies said the victim, identified as John Stubbs, 69, and suspect Joseph Robinson, 45, got into a fight, and the victim tried to walk away.

Deputies said Robinson obtained an ax, walked over to Stubbs and attacked him with the weapon.

Relatives of Stubbs said he had 11 children and his wife died of cancer six months ago.

“It’s disheartening, but justice will be served,” said Stubbs’ niece, Michelle Johnson.

A witness said Robinson snuck up on Stubbs from behind.

“He came up behind the truck and ‘woop, woop’ twice,” said Annie Macon.

Witnesses and relatives said there was a heated argument just before 3 p.m. over lottery tickets and beer.

“It’s a shock. We are still trying to cope with it and deal with the situation right now,” said Johnson.

The suspect was identified by witnesses. Deputies arrested Robinson after a 6-hour search.

Stubbs was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center as a trauma alert, where he died.

Robinson, who has a long history of arrests, was booked into the Orange County Jail.
