Man shot in road-rage confrontation, Altamonte Springs police say

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — A gunman remains at large after shooting a motorist Thursday during a road-rage incident, the Altamonte Springs Police Department said.

The shooting happened shortly before 1 p.m. at State Road 436 and South Westmonte Drive, Altamonte Springs police Officer Evelyn Estevez said.

Two motorists were stopped at a red light when they got into a fight and one shot the other in the arm, Estevez said.

"It's very troubling for us," Estevez said. "We have no indication that the victim knew the suspect."

In a call to 911, a witness described the moments leading up to the shooting.

"There were two cars that were arguing," she said. "And the guy in the black car shot at the guy next to us. He is bleeding."

It looked like the shooting was a result of road rage, the witness told dispatchers.

"It looks like they almost hit each other trying to change lanes and the black car was taunting him and cursing him," she said. "They put down the windows and they parked next to each other and it looks like they were just exchanging words and the other guy shot him."

Investigators said the wounded 50-year-old man was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries that weren’t life-threatening.

Police said detectives were able to find surveillance footage of the gunman's vehicle, which is described as a black or dark colored four-door sedan with tinted windows.

"I hate to hear it was a road rage (incident)," motorist Michael Carter said. "We don't need no more of that."

The shooting remains under investigation.
