Man with special needs made honorary deputy after refusing to commit burglary

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A man with special needs received gifts from the Orange County Sheriff's Office Thursday after deputies said he refused to be pressured into committing a crime.

"We're saying thank you to Skylar for being a good citizen," said Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings.

Deputies said 20-year-old Skylar refused to take part in a burglary, and they believe that in retaliation, his most prized possessions, an Orange County Sheriff's Office flight suit and his karate belt, were stolen and burned.

Circuit Judge Patricia Strowbridge teamed up with Demings to have them replaced, and presented the items to Skylar.

Demings also made Skylar an honorary deputy.
