Marion County woman dies after being struck with ax, deputies say

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — A Marion County woman who was hit in the head with an ax died Sunday, deputies said Monday.

Deputies were called to a home in the 500 block of NE 129th Terrace in Silver Springs for a domestic disturbance, deputies said.

Two women were found, one with severe trauma to her head, and the other with non-life-threatening injuries.

"I tried everything. I tried everything to save her," said Thomas Zivanovich, who is Amanda Christia's uncle.

Deputies said Durant Aundrey Smith, 40, came to the home to get some of his personal items and began attacking Christia's with an ax and a block of wood. Another friend tried to stop the fight and was also hurt.

Smith was later found hiding in his vehicle on NE 118th Avenue Road in Silver Springs, deputies said.

"He had a long history of violence against her and she did have a permanent injunction against him," said Lauren Lettelier with the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

Smith has not yet been charged with Christia's death.
