Miami-Dade detective shoots, wounds teen carjacking suspect

MIAMI, Fla. — Authorities say a 16-year-old was shot and wounded by a Miami-Dade detective after flashing a gun as police tried to stop a car during a carjacking investigation.

The incident unfolded in Miami on Wednesday as detectives were following up on a carjacking. According to a news release, the detectives spotted the vehicle. It made a quick turn and a passenger jumped out, brandished a gun and pointed it at police.

The news release says a detective fired her weapon but missed and the suspect ran. A short distance away the driver and another passenger got out and ran, the release said.

One of the teens turned and pointed a gun at officers, and was shot when a detective fired in response, investigators said.

The teen was taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

The second individual who jumped from the car was caught and arrested, the release said.

After an extensive search of the area, officers found the teen who initially fled from officers, police said.

Detectives reported they recovered two guns from the suspects during the investigation.
