New evidence released in shooting of Brevard County deputy

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — The State Attorney’s Office has released a pile of evidence in the case against the man accused of shooting a Brevard County deputy during a prostitution sting.

Dashcam video captured the tense moments on Aug. 20, after gun shots rang out on Covina Street in Port St. John.

Three Brevard County Sheriff’s Office agents were there to arrest Mary Ellyn Derossett on prostitution charges, when investigators said her uncle, John Derossett, opened fire and shot Agent Casey Smith.

Smith was critically wounded and Derossett was also injured in an exchange of gunfire.

Mary Ellyn Derossett accepted a plea deal in the prostitution charges.

John Derossett told investigators it was no ambush like the one deputies at the scene described.

The new documents show Smith was the backup for the undercover agent who knocked on Mary Ellyn Derossett’s door shortly before showing her his badge.

Instead of a smooth arrest, agents said she pulled away and called for her uncle, who was armed.

Gunfire erupted, injuring Smith and John Derossett. His niece made the 911 call.

“Somebody tried to pull me out and I started yelling for him. He came out and brought his gun and show into the sky. Somebody, whoever these men are, shot at him,” she told the 911 dispatcher.

According to newly released documents, before the first shot was fired, one of the agent said he yelled, “Sheriff” and two of the agents, including Smith, were wearing marked tactical vests.

Agents said they never heard John Derossett say a word.

Mary Ellyn Derossett and John Derossett were removed from the home by responding deputies.

Later from his hospital bed, John Derossett reportedly told investigators he was attacked and said he didn’t ambush the deputies.
