Officials unveil plans for new Parramore school

ORLANDO, Fla. — It’s being called “a school like you’ve never seen before” and it’s in the works in a Parramore neighborhood.

The new school will cater to students from preschool age through eighth-grade.

Those behind the new project are partnering with several other groups to ensure an enriching experience for every child who will be attending.

The school will be built on Parramore Avenue and Amelia Street.

“This is what the taxpayers, not just the board but the taxpayers of Orange County, brought to reality,” said school board member Kathleen Gordon.

The school will partner with the Rosen Foundation, the UCF Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida, Valencia College and the city of Orlando.

“We have so many partners and more to come that we won’t be able to announce today that are going to help make this a real community hub and a school for this entire community,” said Orange county Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Barbara Jenkins.

The Rosen Foundation will also pay to send any Jones High School graduates living in the Parramore neighborhood to a two-year or four-year college or vocational school in Florida.

“We think of it as a new beacon of hope, as a center of opportunity not just for our children, but for their families for their parents. We're going to have something for everyone right here in this community,” Jenkins said.

The school will include on-site activities along with a media center, parking garage, gymnasium and a courtyard.

“It’s K through 8 which is exciting because my kids can stay in school together and it’s for the neighborhood, which is exciting,” said parent Tauresa Maldonado.

The approved budget is $41.3 million.

The school is slated to open in August 2017.
