Officials ID hit-and-run driver fatally shot while allegedly attacking deputy with oar

FRUITLAND PARK, Fla. — A man who was killed in a deputy-involved shooting in Fruitland Park was identified on Wednesday.

Deputies said they responded Tuesday to a report of a hit-and-run in which a driver crashed into Fruitland Discount Beverage and then into another vehicle near Sable Palm Drive and Piccola Road.

Authorities said Wayne Dorsey, 49, of Leesburg had attempted to carjack an occupied vehicle just before the crash. Witnesses said Dorsey was acting erratically.

Investigators said Dorsey ran to a lake, got onto a boat and tried to hit a deputy with an oar while the deputy was chest-deep in the water.

“A Taser was deployed, which was ineffective," deputies said in a news release, "The suspect again attempted to hit the deputy in the head with the oar, at which time the deputy discharged his firearm.”

Dorsey was pronounced dead at the scene.

"I hate to be judgmental, but he looked like he was high on something. His eyeballs were this big around," said resident Bob Hannon.

Hannon had a run in with Dorsey shortly before he crashed the car into the store.

Hannon said he offered to help Dorsey and that’s when he drove into Hannon’s car.

"He intentionally jerked his truck to the right and bashed my Mazda." "I thank God that I’m OK. I’m sorry for his demise."

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating. The deputy was placed on administrative leave.
