A 78-year-old woman was inadvertently shot by her son Wednesday night when a burglar broke into their west Orlando home on Mabello Boulevard near LB McLeod, Orlando police said.
The man said he was trying to save his mother, but during a struggle with the burglar, a gun fired.
Investigators said Henry Stallings Jr. broke into two occupied homes in the west Orlando neighborhood.
Witnesses said Stallings was screaming and acting “crazy” when he was outside.
Police said Stallings first broke into the home where the woman was shot, and then he broke into a house across the street.
Authorities said Stallings broke the front window and climbed into the 78-year-old woman’s bedroom.
The woman's son entered the room and saw Stallings shaking his mother and demanding money, police said.
Police said the son, who was holding a gun, started fighting with Stallings and fired the gun several times, inadvertently shooting his mother.
Stallings managed to wrestle the gun away and left, police said.
The homeowner across the street, Willie Stephens, said it’s always been a quiet neighborhood, until Wednesday night.
"He came running across here, then jumped through my window. I just replaced that window there," Stephens said.
Stephens said Stallings was covered in blood after he broke through the window of the home, while three people were inside.
Stallings ran into the family’s bathroom and started destroying things, Stephens said.
"The commode; he kind of like ripped it up and moved it around. Then busted out all the lights and put a hole in the wall," Stephens said.
Police said Stallings was arrested after he crawled out the broken window.
"I'm just glad that it's over," Stephens said.
The woman is in stable condition at a hospital.
Police said Stallings is a nine-time convicted felon, and he has eight more charges against him.
