Orange County 15-year-old killed, driver found in nearby backyard, troopers say

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orlando man has been arrested and faces charges with leaving the scene of an accident after he was accused of running over a 15-year-old, troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened at 3:05 a.m. Saturday on Avalon Park Boulevard and Pellicer Drive in Orlando.

Troopers said Ryan Fischer, 35, was driving his motorcycle south on Avalon Road when he struck and killed Alec Gomez, who was in the road.

Fischer’s motorcycle flipped on its side, he got out and ran away, troopers said. He was later found in a nearby backyard and was arrested, troopers said.

Witnesses told investigators that several children were playing in the road when the hit-and-run occurred.

The crash remains under investigation.

There is a statewide push to add an alert system when someone is struck by a vehicle and the driver runs off. It's similar to an Amber Alert system. The vehicle's car description and any other information that could help track down the driver would be put up on a billboard.

The proposed legislation is now in the appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Tourism and Economic Development.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
