Orange County hosts free e-waste and hazardous waste collection

Orange County government (WFTV Staff)

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Orange County Utilities will host a free household hazardous waste and electronic waste collection event for residents on Saturday, April 18. The community event is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lake Buena Vista High School in Orlando.

The collection event, located at 11305 Daryl Carter Parkway, allows participants to safely dispose of hazardous materials and electronics that are typically restricted from regular garbage pickup. The service is provided free of charge to all Orange County residents.

Household items accepted for disposal include oil and latex-based paint, household chemicals, pesticides and herbicides. The utility will also take cooking oil, grease, rechargeable batteries, lead-acid batteries, pool chemicals and automobile fluids. Materials like varnish, stains and various fuels are also permitted. For the purposes of this event, an item is classified as electronic waste if it contains a circuit board. While most electronics are accepted, Orange County Utilities specified that rear-projection TVs are prohibited from the collection.

Participants must follow specific volume and size restrictions for certain materials. Paint and chemical disposals are limited to 25 gallons per vehicle. Propane tanks will be accepted only if they are 20 pounds or smaller. To ensure safety during handling, residents are required to cover all lithium battery terminals with tape and separate them from other types of batteries.

For residents unable to attend the Saturday event, Orange County maintains permanent drop-off locations for hazardous waste. Information regarding those sites, including hours of operation and locations, is available through the Orange County Utilities Solid Waste Hotline at 407-836-660.
