ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Orange County became agreed late last week to make a policy that would require 20 minutes of recess per day for kindergarten through fifth grade.
This is a story Eyewitness News has followed for more than a year now. Parents said they’ve spent two years fighting to make recess a requirement.
RELATED STORY:
“We were told that many schools were doing some sort of recess. The problem is, is that some form of recess means five to 10 minutes on Fridays only. So you had some kids as young as 5 years old were getting out for only five to 10 minutes and that's the only break they were getting in the entire school week,” said parent Angela Browning.
Channel 9’s Cierra Putman learned that before there was a PE policy, but the new policy lets kids decide that they want to do.

Last year, the school board tried to recommend recess for every school, but school board member Linda Kobert said it just wasn't enough, so it became a written policy change.
“We got most of our schools there, but we want all of our schools to have recess everyday guaranteed,” Kobert said.
The board will make the change official with a vote in December. Central Florida, Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties all agreed to about 100 minutes per week or 20 minutes of recess per day.
The Lake County School District didn't change its policy, but the superintendent issued a 60 minute per week recess minimum or 12 minutes per day.
So far, there's no recess policy in the Brevard or Volusia County School Districts.
