Orange County teacher accused of sending teens inappropriate texts working at South Carolina school

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orange County teacher who resigned in 2013 and was later accused of sending male students inappropriate text messages is back in the classroom in South Carolina, officials said.

Korey Washington, the former Boone High School dean, had his teaching license revoked in January after an investigation found he had exchanged sexually-explicit text messages with students during the 2012-2013 school year, said the Florida Department of Education.

On top of the revocation of his license, Washington was also barred from ever reapplying for a teaching certificate in Florida.

Washington is currently teaching at Wagener-Salley High School in Aiken County, South Carolina, where he is also listed as the sponsor of the Young Men of Distinction mentor program.

He applied for the position in South Carolina before the investigation in Florida, which is why his background check came up clean, officials said.

His job may be in jeopardy after South Carolina officials were contacted by their counterparts in Florida.

The Aiken County School District attorney told Channel 9 that officials were looking into the allegations against Washington in Florida.

“Based upon contact from Florida, this state has initiated interim credential action, which has the effect of temporarily suspending a teacher’s legal right to work, pending further proceedings,” the attorney said.
