Orlando to decrease trash pickups, increase recycle pickups

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando residents in target areas will see a decrease in trash pickups from twice a week to once a week.

Some residents said they're bracing for a backlog, like the one Orange County faced over the last several weeks.

The decrease in trash pickups will lead to an increase in recycling pickups, which will go from once every other week to once a week.

"(I'm) not excited about it. (I'm) not looking forward to it. (I) don't want the hassle (and) don't want somebody dictating exactly where I put my trashcan. (I) don't really like once a week," resident Susan Harmon said.

Officials said the goal is to encourage residents to throw away less and recycle more.

"We've been here for a month, and we don't even know when recycling is. We just started throwing everything in the trash bin because we never saw the other trash can out there," Harmon said.

They recycle bins are maroon, but Harmon said she's never seen them placed outside.

When the new program begins, recycle day will be on Thursday, which is currently the area's second trash pickup day.

Unlike the county, which outsources its trash haulers, the city uses its own, which it says will alleviate the confusion.
