ORLANDO, Fla. — For the homeless, though, it’s more than uncomfortable, it’s dangerous.
At the Up Center, staff members and volunteers were working to keep area homeless people hydrated and out of the heat, if only for a little while.
Orlando resident Danny Harxhi was at the center Wednesday to help the people and families suffering in the heat.
“It makes you tired and makes you sweaty,” he said. “You see, I’ve been sweating for 24 hours almost.”
The Up Center’s mission is to meet the needs of the community, and for now, the need is helping people deal with the heat, executive director Eric Gray said.
“Today’s needs just happen to be that it is a thousand degrees in Orlando,” he said.
The center also helps the less fortunate who deal with medical problems, which can be exacerbated by the heat, Gray said.
“If you have any type of health issue at all, you have to be careful about what climate you are in,” he said.
