Orlando police: Gunman shot by off-duty officer

ORLANDO, Fla. — An off-duty Orlando police officer shot and injured a man Sunday after the man opened fire outside a busy club, according to police.

Investigators said the incident started shortly before 3 a.m. at Club Lux on International Drive where officers were clearing the parking lot when one of them called for assistance with an active shooter.

The officer said he saw a man in the parking lot firing a gun so he shot back, injuring the shooter.

Police have not released the identity or condition of the man who was shot.

A portion of I-Drive at Kirkman Road was shut down for nearly six hours while police collected evidence.

By daylight, the people who work in the shopping plaza started hearing chatter about the incident.

“It doesn’t surprise me too much,” said plaza employee Jason Figueroa. “You never know what could happen. People could have gotten shot by a stray bullet.”

The officer was not injured.

Per standard procedure, the officer will be placed on paid administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting.

Police do not know why the suspect was randomly firing bullets in the parking lot.
